Hints for learning to spell
.
Remember, all of these things help you to spell well.
.
1. Syllables - Always split long words into syllables, identify the stressed syllable and exaggerate vowel sounds when learning words, e.g. archipelago (ar-chi-pel-a-go) - see Spelling Tutor
.
2. Look for short words and meaning within words -
bureau (an old desk), bureaucrat (Where does a bureaucrat sit all day?), bureaucracy
conscience (con means joint or together, science comes from the Latin word for knowledge)
We bring all our knowledge together to decide what is right or wrong.
.
3. Spelling rules - see Logical Spelling
.
4. Ways of spelling sounds - Enter words that cause problems into Spelling Tutor's Diary / Dictionary of Sounds (free copy). Associate something hard with something easy.
.
5. Look for other words with the same spelling pattern, e.g. instantaneous, miscellaneous, ...
.
6. Make up memory aids -
I am very independent at putting up my tent. We separate things into parts.
I'll have two scoops of icecream on my dessert. He is a desperate person.
We eat CC's and m&m's at our accommodation. I suffer from nausea at sea.
.
7. Does the word look right?
.
8. Use the spell checker on a computer - Jot down the words that you got wrong to learn later.
